Ravi Teja was born in Jaggampeta, Andhra Pradesh. 

A middle-class upbringing, extensive travel across India, and an early passion for Indian cinema shaped his early life. 

From childhood, Ravi Teja had a strong interest in cinema. He admired Amitabh Bachchan and often re-enacted film scenes at home.

Ravi Teja’s father was Bhupatiraju Rajagopal Raju, a retired pharmacist who passed away at the age of 90 on July 15, 2025. Despite his eldest son’s monumental stardom in Tollywood, he chose to live a humble, grounded life away from the public eye. 

He worked as a government pharmacist, primarily based in Jaggampeta in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. 

He suffered from age-related health issues toward the end of his life and passed away peacefully at Ravi Teja’s residence in Hyderabad. His passing was deeply mourned by prominent South Indian industry veterans, including Megastar Chiranjeevi, who fondly shared memories of working with him on film sets.

Ravi Teja’s mother is Bhupatiraju Rajya Lakshmi (often referred to as Rajyalakshmi), a homemaker who has been an essential pillar of support throughout the actor’s life and career.

Ravi Teja built his career in Telugu cinema through a long journey of small roles, assistant direction work, lead roles, action comedies, and film production. He is now known as one of the most popular mass actors in Tollywood, with a career that has run from the late 1980s to the present. 

Pre-Film Career & Early Struggles (1988–1998)

Ravi Teja moved to Madras in 1988 while still pursuing his graduation to build a career in films. In his early years, he lived with YVS Chowdary and Gunasekhar, acted in small roles in films such as Karthavyam, Abhimanyu, Chaitanya, Collector Gaari Alludu, and Aaj Ka Goonda Raj, and also worked as an assistant director in Telugu and Bollywood projects. 

He later worked under Krishna Vamsi in Ninne Pelladata (1996), where he also appeared in a small role. During this phase, he played minor and supporting roles in films like Allari Priyudu, Sindhooram, Manasichi Choodu, Premaku Velayara, Samudram, and Annayya. 2002 — Blockbuster Year: Avunu Valliddaru Ista Paddaru!, Idiot, Khadgam

In 2002, his next film, Avunu Valliddaru Ista Paddaru!, directed by Vamsy and co-starring Kaveri, was released and was a success at the box office, winning Teja acclaim. In 2003, Ravi Teja worked again with director Puri Jagannadh for Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi. The film co-starring Asin became a blockbuster hit. The year also saw Teja working in commercially successful films such as Dongodu, co-starring Kaveri and directed by Srinivas Bheemineni, and Veede, co-starring Aarthi Agarwal and directed by Ravi Raja Pinisetty.

2004 — Venky & Naa Autograph

In 2004, Teja starred in Venky, directed by Srinu Vaitla. He also appeared in Naa Autograph, directed by cinematographer-turned-director S. Gopal Reddy, with a critic writing: “Ravi Teja delivers a stunning performance as a dejected lover.” Chanti was also released that year, directed by Sobhan. 2005 — Bhadra & Bhageeratha

In 2005, Ravi Teja’s work included Bhadra, directed by Boyapati Srinu, and Bhageeratha, directed by Rasool Ellore. He also worked in the crime film Shock, directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Ram Gopal Varma. Bhadra starred Meera Jasmine as the female lead. 

2006 — Career High: Vikramarkudu

In 2006, Teja worked with the director S.S. Rajamouli for Vikramarkudu. The film grossed over ₹250 million, proving to be his highest-grossing film until then. Idlebrain praised his performance: “Vikramarkudu is the best film of Ravi Teja so far in histrionics aspect. He did both characters of Athali Sathi Babu and Vikram Rathod equally well.” The film co-starred Anushka Shetty in the lead and was a blockbuster, later remade in Hindi as Rowdy Rathore, in Tamil as Siruthai, and in Kannada as Veera Madakari. He also released Khatarnak the same year. 

2007 — Dubai Seenu

In 2007, Teja appeared in Dubai Seenu, his third collaboration with director Srinu Vaitla. The film starred Anushka Shetty as the lead heroine and was a significant commercial success. Swathi Reddy played a pivotal, highly praised supporting role in his hit creative drama Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule. 

2008 — Krishna, Baladur, Neninthe

In 2008, Teja acted in three films: V.V. Vinayak’s Krishna, Baladur, and Neninthe. Neninthe marked his fourth collaboration with director Puri. Although the film was not successful at the box office, Teja’s portrayal of an up-and-coming director in the film received acclaim and won him the Nandi Award for Best Actor. Krishna featured Trisha Krishnan as his co-star, while Neninthe starred Siya. 

2009 — Kick & Anjaneyulu

In 2009, Teja worked with director Surender Reddy for the action comedy Kick. The film was a huge commercial success grossing over ₹300 million. Many film analysts and trade circuits attributed the success of Kick to the revival of Telugu cinema in early 2009. The film starred Ileana D’Cruz and Shaam alongside Ravi Teja. Later that year, he appeared in Anjaneyulu, co-starring Charmy Kaur and Taapsee Pannu. 

2010 — Shambo Shiva Shambo & Don Seenu

In 2010, his films included Shambo Shiva Shambo starring Priyamani and Gopichand Malineni-directed Don Seenu. Don Seenu starred Shriya Saran as the female lead and was a commercial success.

2011 — Mirapakay, Dongala Mutha, Veera

In 2011, Teja appeared in four films. His first release was Harish Shankar’s Mirapakay. He later starred in Ram Gopal Varma’s Dongala Mutha and made a cameo appearance as a body double of himself in Katha Screenplay Darshakatvam Appalaraju, also directed by Varma. His last release of the year was Veera. Mirapakay co-starred with Richa Gangopadhyay as the female lead. 

2012 — Nippu, Daruvu, Devudu Chesina Manushulu, Sarocharu

In 2012, Teja starred in four films: Gunasekhar’s Nippu, Siva’s Daruvu, a fifth collaboration with director Puri for fantasy comedy Devudu Chesina Manushulu, and Parasuram’s Sarocharu — a change of image praised by critics. Sarocharu co-starred with Richa Gangopadhyay and Kajal Aggarwal. 

2013 — Balupu

In 2013, Teja starred in Gopichand Malineni’s action comedy Balupu. The Times of India wrote: “Ravi Teja has come up with an entertaining performance. He later played the lead in Bengal Tiger (2015) alongside Raashii Khanna, directed by Sampath Nandi. This film, which grossed over ₹400 million, became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of that year. Bengal Tiger starred Tamannaah Bhatia and Raashi Khanna as the two female leads. 

2016 — Sabbatical Year

Ravi Teja took a sabbatical in 2016 to focus on personal commitments and recuperation after a period of mixed box-office results, returning recharged for his next project. 

2017 — Comeback: Raja the Great

After taking a sabbatical for one year, he played a blind man in Anil Ravipudi-directed Raja the Great (2017). The film was Teja’s first ₹500 million grosser and one of his biggest hits. The film starred Chiranjeevi, Shruti Haasan, Catherine Tresa, Prakash Raj, Bobby Simha, and Rajendra Prasad, and became a massive blockbuster, grossing an estimated ₹236 crore. Ravanasura was directed by Sudheer Varma, with Faria Abdullah, Daksha Nagarkar, Anu Emmanuel and Megha Akash as the lead actresses, and Sushant in a pivotal role. 2024 — Eagle & Mr Bachchan

Eagle (2024) was a Telugu-language action thriller written and directed by Karthik Gattamneni. It starred Ravi Teja in the titular role alongside Anupama Parameswaran and Kavya Thapar. Released on 9 February 2024, it received mixed reviews from critics. Mr Bachchan (2024), released on 15 August 2024, co-starred Bhagyashri Borse but was also a box-office disappointment, moving to OTT within 28 days of its theatrical run.

2025 — Mass Jathara

Mass Jathara (2025) was a Telugu action comedy film written and directed by Bhanu Bogavarapu in his directorial debut. The film starred Sreeleela in the lead opposite Ravi Teja, who played Lakshman Bheri — a hot-headed railway police Sub-Inspector transferred to a remote area. It was released on 31 October 2025.

2026 — Bhartha Mahasayulaku Wignyapthi

Bhartha Mahasayulaku Wignyapthi (transl. An Appeal to Husbands) is a 2026 Telugu-language comedy drama film written and directed by Kishore Tirumala. It stars Ravi Teja alongside Ashika Ranganath and Dimple Hayathi. Released on 13 January 2026, it opened to mixed reviews and was a box-office failure despite the festive release window.

Irumudi (August 2026)

Directed by Shiva Nirvana (known for Tuck Jagadish), Irumudi presents Ravi Teja in a markedly different role — a devoted father who, determined to protect his daughter at any cost, resolves to take Ayyappa Deeksha and leave behind his drinking habits. Priya Bhavani Shankar plays his wife Kaveri, and child actor Baby Nakshathra plays their daughter. The ensemble cast also features Sai Kumar, Ajay Ghosh, Ramesh Indira, Swasika, and several others in key roles. It is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar under Mythri Movie Makers with music by GV Prakash Kumar and is scheduled for an August 2026 theatrical release.
